About Open Door Ministries
Open Door Ministries, formerly Watchmen Ministries, is a faith-based, non-profit corporation, composed of a seven member board, which seeks to minister to the needs of the incarcerated individual.
Open Door Ministries is active in two venues of ministry to inmates in Minnesota as well as across the nation. The first is the publication of our bi-monthly newsletter, The Open Door. The second is our mentorship program, The Threefold Cord.
The Open Door is a bi-monthly publication written by inmates for inmates, their families and friends. Newsletter submissions are reviewed and edited by Open Door Ministries board members. The first edition was published in January 2003. It is distributed via U.S. Mail and online.
The newsletter is designed to allow inmates a place where they can openly express their Christian faith through their artwork, poetry, Bible studies and other writings. It allows them a place to take a stand for their faith and their beliefs, as well as witness to their families and friends. What they want to say is that they have indeed changed. They want to show they are on a new pathway of renewal and that change has come, not because of human effort, but because of their new relationship with God and His Son, Jesus Christ, through the Holy Spirit. The Open Door gives them a place to say these things and verifies for them that they are a part of something much bigger; that they can begin a new life even amidst the reality of the sentence they are serving.
The second venue of ministry is a mentorship program entitled The Threefold Cord. This program is based upon the scriptural principle set forth in the Bible in Ecclesiastes 4:12, that states, "...though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken."
Christ-centered discipleship is the primary focus of this program. Inmates who are seeking to know Christ or have accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior are connected with trained, volunteer mentors from the "outside". Together, in a face-to-face relationship and with Christ at the center of their relationship, real growth and change can and does occur in their lives.
